When you hover over one of the activating icons it will show you a multitude of info like New Incoming Unread E-Mails, New Incoming Unread Text Messages [if you separate your e-mail and sms inboxes], Calendar Entries and Missed Calls.
The activating icons consist of Messages, Call Log, SMS And MMS and Calendar.
