How does it work?  When you hover over one of the activating icons it will show you a multitude of info like New Incoming Unread E-Mails, New Incoming Unread Text Messages [if you separate your e-mail and sms inboxes], Calendar Entries and Missed Calls. 

The activating icons consist of Messages, Call Log, SMS / MMS and Calendar.  Please Note: Some BlackBerry Operating Systems do not display SMS Message, but most devices have been issued new Operating Systems that correct this so update your OS if needed.
